Colonial Landfill is operated in a manner designed to protect public health and the environment. We regularly monitor and report our activities to the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ). All waste is disposed of within the boundary of a constructed landfill area that has been engineered to protect the environment and meet or exceed all federal, state and local regulations. There are many environmental protection systems at Colonial Landfill.
Colonial Landfill is operated in a manner designed to protect public health and the environment. All waste is disposed of within the boundary of a constructed landfill area that has been engineered to protect the environment and meet or exceed all federal, state and local regulations.
Landfill gas is collected through a system of 178 extraction wells. The collected landfill gas is safely destroyed at an on-site flare. In addition, the Landfill’s surface and exterior gas probes are also regularly monitored to evaluate the landfill gas management system performance.
Protection of all water sources is a priority at Colonial Landfill. The Landfill is designed with a highly engineered composite liner system designed to contain any liquids that percolate through the solid waste. The liquids are transferred to a water treatment facility. Surface water at the site is controlled through a series of diversion berms and drainage ditches to preserve its quality. In addition, Colonial Landfill assesses groundwater with 22 individual groundwater monitoring wells. Each well is routinely tested to verify the groundwater’s safety.
More than 30 collection routes in and around Ascension Parish use Colonial Landfill for disposal.
Waste is carefully compacted and covered daily to limit wind-blown debris and odors, and create a stable engineered hill.
